DIANE AND JACOB ANDERSON-MINSHALL

back, Yoshi suspected Theresa would feel internal pressure to get the meeting over with. She had the polite tone New Englanders mastered, and would be gracious despite her misgivings and annoyance at the intrusion.

“We just got back from the doctor.” Theresa raised her voice, as though now that Yoshi had acknowledged her blindness she had also gone deaf. She would have to add another line to her sandwich board sign: I am blind, not deaf. “I’m getting ready to leave for work, but I guess we have a few minutes.”

She stepped back from the door.

“Doctor? Nothing too serious, I hope?”

“Just a checkup. Izzie?” Theresa called to her partner. “We’ve got company.”

A faint smell of cinnamon and cardamom embraced Yoshi as she entered the house. Using her cane, she could ascertain that the pathway was clear of obstruction. She imagined it would not be so in several years, as children’s toys cluttered the ß oor.

“Nice to meet you.” Isabelle sounded like Oprah Winfrey with a faint Caribbean inß ection. First generation, perhaps.

A groan escaped from Isabelle’s direction, the sound of discomfort common to pregnant women negotiating the newly gained girth. Yoshi heard the sound of a lever being pulled and deduced that Isabelle had sat in a recliner and was extending the leg support.

“I apologize.” Isabelle chuckled. “The doctor says I have to keep my feet up, to reduce the swelling. My ankles, actually. It’s only my second trimester but they’re the size of coconuts already.”

Yoshi smiled but got directly to the point. “I understand the child was conceived with Jeff Conant’s sperm, is that correct?”

“Yes,” Isabelle answered without a hint of defense.

“Did you go through a local sperm bank?” Yoshi had done a little research when she Þ rst got into the ofÞ ce that morning and learned that most Bay Area sperm banks offered a service to women using outside donors. They could bring in the sample to be processed, tested, and inseminated on the premises or at their own residence.

“No, it was just between us. We’ve known Jeff for a year now. We met him at a meeting for queers who want kids, held at the community center. Afterward we hung out a few times, and when we were ready he just seemed like the perfect choice.”

“What was the agreement?”
