I rolled back the worn carpet and lifted the floorboard. I took out the gun and the clipping about Lily’s murder I’d put with Jimmy’s files. I studied the grainy photographs. That shoe up by her shoulder was stuck in my mind. There was a second photograph: a close-up of her face covered by someone’s handkerchief, its contours evident, the shoe inches away. I stared at it awhile before I realized what that shoe was doing up there. Lily had used it to fight. I smoothed the crinkled newsprint and peered closely. There was a small tuft of something, fuzz or hair or fabric, dangling there on the end of the heel. The photo was too grainy to see any more than that. But that tuft—it belonged to whoever had killed her. There was no way of telling what it was from the photo. But the police would know. If they cared.
