Created in a Surrey laboratory using carbon nanotubes that were discovered in the 1990s, a new material called Vantablack is the blackest substance known to man. It cannot be processed by human vision, so that shapes and contours are lost and it looks as though there is nothing there, the closest thing to a black hole we can so far experience. Vantablack reflects just 0.035 per cent of any light shone on it – for a comparison, matt-black charcoal reflects more than one hundred times as much. So far, no one except artists Anish Kapoor really seems to know what they would want to do with it, although a Belgian artist, Frederik de Wilde, claims he might have got there first with his works of Nano Black, which he formed in collaboration with NASA.
