One of the most disturbing findings concerns the low quality of experience reported while listening to teachers lecture, especially considering that lectures take up nearly one-quarter of all classroom time. Equally troubling in this day of increasing technology use are the significantly low levels of challenge, concentration, and importance associated with watching a video or other audiovisual material, an activity students enjoy. The profile of student responses to taking tests is not surprising. Tests are reputedly the most dreaded and dismal part of a student’s existence; students’ lack of enjoyment and desire to be doing something else when taking tests confirms this. No other activity, however, quite compares to formal assessments in terms of their perceived importance and the high degree of challenge and concentration they provide. It begins to appear, then, that students find school activities either challenging or enjoyable, but not both.

One activity with positive reports in terms of academic press (i.e., academic challenge, rigor, and relevance) as well as more affective and motivational measures was individual work, a mainstay among classroom activities. Such positive reports may have something to do with the high levels of control that students experience while working by themselves. Although the number of times group work is reported may be too small to obtain a clear reading, group activities also compare favorably with other activities along the affective dimension and occupy an intermediate position with respect to measures of academic pressure.
