Teddy purposely sat in the back of the car. The further she distanced herself from Sloan the better. She reminded herself to keep everything professional. He hurt her before he’d do it again. Too bad she hadn’t done such a good job at keeping her emotions at bay while on her mini-vacation. She was glad to be back in Jacksonville.

Linda and Sloan made small talk about the vacation while Teddy tried to disappear into the upholstery. A shooting on the Northside took most officers away so Sloan drove both of them to work. Good thing or she’d have to sit up front, his scent cascading even further over her. He glanced over the backseat every few seconds. Teddy’s shoulders relaxed when they finally arrived.

“Donny and Anthony will be here later to pick you up. I have to stay late at the station.” Sloan opened the passenger side for Linda then the rear door for Teddy.

“I’ll be a bit late,” Teddy said. “I have a meeting after work. I should be done about seven.”

“What time are you off?” Sloan turned to Linda.

“I should be done by five. If you want, I can wait for Teddy.”

“That won’t be necessary. Either Donny or Anthony will be here to pick you up. I’ll get Teddy on my way. I know it’s been somewhat quiet but you’re still not to go anywhere without an officer.” He jerked his head to the man pulling up in a patrol car. “If either of you have to run an errand or anything, you let him take you.”

Both Linda and Teddy concurred.

It felt good to have the weekend behind her. Teddy enjoyed the mini-vacation but being with Sloan on the beach caused strong feelings to surface. And while most people complained about work, Teddy loved her job. She enjoyed helping others. It made her demons seem small compared to those of her clients.

Fresh flowers from an Army sergeant who’d gone through treatment sat on her desk. He and his wife were expecting their second child. Teddy was happy for them; however, that pang of longing for her own children rubbed her raw. The best thing she could do was remain busy so she didn’t focus on her loses. She piled into her work the rest of the day.

Hours later, her phone alarm announced it was five fifteen. She inhaled deeply before heading to the room at the top of the stairs.

Why had she let Evelyn talk her into going to the support group meeting? Eight women gathered in chairs arranged in a circle. Teddy took a seat between two empty ones.

“Welcome ladies,” the director said. “Does anyone have any news?”

The women looked at each other. Sherry Milton, a small African-American woman who volunteered at the clinic, raised her hand to speak. Her curly brown hair bounced off her shoulders.

“I made love to my husband for the first time last night.” A blush ran across Sherry’s face. “I can’t believe I’m sharing this with everyone. I’m just so excited.”

“And how was it?” The director grinned.
