Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Omega-3 fatty acids, especially docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid, are essential for healthy brain development and proper communication between brain cells. They occur naturally in fatty fish and certain plant foods. In recent years, these healthy fats have been widely touted for their effects in preventing heart disease and depression. Some studies have suggested that these essential fatty acids might help improve attention, focus, and activity in children who have attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Some people believe they may also have a beneficial effect on children with ASD, although it is not well understood why this would be.

Small-scale research studies have suggested that high doses of omega-3 fatty acids might help in reducing repetitive behaviors such as pacing or rocking, fixated interests, irritability, and hyperactivity in children with ASD. Evidence, however, is sparse. There is a need for larger scale research studies to better understand the possible benefit of omega-3 fatty acids for children with ASD.

If you want to give your child omega-3 fatty acid supplements, make sure to talk with your child’s pediatrician first. Keep in mind, too, that these fatty acids may cause gastrointestinal problems such as diarrhea, bloating, and abdominal pain. Make sure to identify target behaviors before starting treatment and keep track of how those behaviors change during treatment, so you’ll know whether the supplements are making a difference.
