There are some people who relish complication. They like fitting together intricate Chinese puzzles. They like the complexity of a deal when in the end all the bits fit neatly together. They are, in fact, suspicious of anything simple and easily bored with it. Academics love complication for the sake of complication because it is a highly marketable substitute for ideas. The drawing suggests that a good fit has been achieved. But is this enough? Aesthetics and elegance may have little to do with a business situation but complication signals trouble. Trouble in maintaining the fit, trouble in servicing the fit, both arise from complication. Complicated political formulas work for a while and then fall apart. Complicated things are never robust and things that are not robust require a disproportionate amount of attention. Their failure rate is high.
