Walls were closing in around her, it was stifling to be inside.

She thought living between her job and home was a pain in the ass. Anjula scooted over and twisted to the side as a dull ache started behind her knees. She breathed through the pain and gazed out the window. Earlier in the morning, a nurse had pulled the blinds so she could see a sliver of blue sky.

Eight weeks of pure hell. Every night, aches riddled her body, and physical therapy was a special brand of torture she wouldn’t wish on her worst enemy. She sucked air through her teeth. That was a lie. If she knew who had it out for her, she would return the pain she felt to that person in spades.

Anjula wrapped her arms around the pillow and tucked it into her side. Fat white clouds floated across the sky, momentarily disappearing between the slats. She closed her eyes and a list of names scrolled through her mind. William’s name always popped into her head first.

Her ex-fiancé snuck into her room a few weeks ago. Was he checking up on the damage he’d inflicted? Was he trying to finish what he started?

A soft knock on her door was followed by the slight crack forming as the barrier was gently pushed open. “Ms. Anjula, there are two detectives here to see you.” The Triad member that Bai Lin somehow contracted to protect her spoke through the opening. It took a week, but she finally got the big guy to tell her his name. Jak-ke; it meant Tiny.

The police had been attempting to get her statement ever since she woke up, and Jin Woo blocked every endeavor. She would have to speak with them eventually. “They can come in.”

Tiny shoved the door wider. “Park Bai Lin will have a fit.”

“I can handle Bai Lin.” Anjula winked. “Send them in.”

He eased to the side. Detectives McKelvey and Moore stepped around Tiny. The latter officer looked the large man up and down before swiveling toward Anjula.

“Must be nice to be able to trade one guard dog for another.” Detective Moore held her gaze.

“Being Dr. Anjula Matthews does have its perks.” She stifled the sharp stabs running along her legs and pushed herself up before tapping the controller to raise the bed to a sitting position. “It’s good to see you, Detective McKelvey.”

“Glad to see you’re feeling better. Thank you for giving us some of your time.” McKelvey smiled gently. “The doctors said you were lucky. I imagine recovery hasn’t been easy.”

“It can’t be hard to cure the disease when you know the cause.”

Moore snickered.

She gave the detective a scathing look. “Ask your questions.” Disgust dripped from her tone.

“Do you have any idea who has it out for you?” McKelvey pulled out a small notebook.

“If I knew the police would be the first to know.” Anjula pursed her lips. “I’ve had plenty of time to think about it, but I really don’t know who hates me to this extent.”
