Mike tried to mentally prepare himself for what would greet him when the hotel door opened. Even if she had so much as a cut on her body, he would go off half-cocked. The woman down at the front desk had only given out Xara’s room number because Xara had specifically said only to give it to her husband, but with the way her eyes had sparkled looking at Dez, she would have likely been able to be convinced otherwise.
“Baby, it’s me,” he called from outside the door.
A few endless moments later, the door opened. He pushed inside, ready to scoop her up into his arms, but she’d already walked away back toward the bed.
“You’re limping.” He reached for her hand but she pulled away. “Xar, are you hurt?”
She turned around. Her white tank top was splattered with red. All the blood drained from his face. Her breaths were short and quivering.
“A man came into the apartment,” she said.
He tried to reach for her again but again, she stepped away from him.
“I don’t want his blood to get on you.”
“It’s fine.” He stepped forward and wrapped her into his arms. “It’s fine. Are you hurt?”
“I tweaked my ankle. It’s fine.”
“How’d you get this blood on you?”
“Fighting with him. Don’t worry, none of it’s mine.” Her head popped up from his shoulder. “Dez, right?”
Behind them, Dez’s voice boomed. “Yeah. I’ll be down in the lobby for a bit. I’m glad you’re okay.”
The door shut. Mike pulled the tank over Xara’s head and tossed it on the floor. He unhooked her bra, slid off her shorts and panties, took her hand and led her to the shower. While the water warmed, he undressed and then stepped inside, pulling her in with him. He then proceeded to wash her body, washing away all the blood and the fighting and the strange men in their home. And while he washed, he heard his uncle’s voice in his head. It was the last long conversation they’d had, the same day he’d taken them to the Waco house.
“You have to let her go, Wei.”
Mike groaned and pressed his back against the yard’s wooden fence. “Uncle, I don’t want to hear it. You’re married.”
“Yes, to your aunt. A member of the Liu dynasty. Diaochan, Xara, doesn’t even know who you really are.”
“Maybe she doesn’t have to know.”
Jian shook his head. “You seem to think that, at some point, Jinhai will just give up. That he’ll say, ‘Oh well, I’m tired now.’ Is that what you think, Wei?”
“I married her, Uncle.” Mike held up his left hand. “Xara is everything to me.”
“Which makes it worse! Do you know your mother died first?”
Mike turned away.
“No, you’re a man now. You can hear this. Jinhai killed your mother, first, so your father could watch her die. To this day, pieces of her body haven’t been found. He’s a sick man. A sick, determined man.”
“I don’t want to hear this, Uncle.”
“You need to hear it!” Jian smacked his palm.
