Ari exhaled when the door pushed open and Dr. Angela Rothmann came walking in. The older woman’s silver hair was pulled back into a loose bun and wisps had fallen out over the course of the day. Dr. Rothmann no longer ran a private practice, but after her husband passed, she couldn’t stand the idea of retirement. So, the guys had found her and recruited her as the temporary team physician until Tayler was ready to resume the role.
Ari pushed up on the hospital bed, her fingers crossed beneath the covers. She had been feeling out of sorts lately. Her body had warded off most of the cold, but she’d been hammered by a string of migraines. Her energy levels steadily declined. And then there was the nausea and the vomiting incident earlier. It wouldn’t be the best time. In fact, it would be the worst time. But she and Julien needed some good news in the midst of all this tragedy.
When Dr. Rothmann’s eyes met hers, her hope faded.
“It was negative, wasn’t it?” she asked.
“I’m so sorry, Ari,” the woman said, her accent like she was still living full-time in Germany. “I know this is not the news you wanted.”
“It’s okay.” Ari swallowed her disappointment. “It’s just not time. Plus, I’m under a lot of stress. How is everything else?”
Dr. Rothmann scanned her results. “With the exception of a slight elevation in your white blood cells, everything else is fine. Of course, Julien called ahead and told us to run some extra tests, which we’re doing.”
“Do you know if he’s on his way?”
“Yes. He’s not too far from the lab.” Dr. Rothmann squinted at something on the iPad in her hands, but then shook her head. “I think your body might still be fighting off a virus, but to be on the safe side, I’m going to give you a course of antibiotics. Does that sound okay with you?”
“Yes, ma’am.”
She squeezed Ari’s leg beneath the covers. “Something we say in Germany: Am Ende wird alles gut sein. Und wenn es nicht gut ist, ist es nicht das Ende. Everything will be okay in the end. If it’s not okay, then it’s not the end.”
Ari smiled. “That’s lovely. Thank you.”
When Dr. Rothmann left, she lay back down on the bed. She wanted to spend her time thinking about Thandie, but it had become too painful. If she wasn’t physically looking at a happy moment they’d shared as a family, her mind would wander. She would see Thandie crying and alone in a cage. The floor would be wet, the room dark and dank. She would cry until she was hoarse, calling out for her Mommy and Daddy, not understanding why they didn’t come. And then her captor would grow tired of the crying, open the cage, wrap their hands around her baby’s precious little neck and—
“What’d they say?”
She startled. Julien was standing in the doorway. “Oh…uh…sorry, what?”
He walked over, lifted her hand, and kissed it. “Are you okay?”
“Oh…oh yeah. Just a bug.
