Using a Navajo guide provides an infinitely more immersive experience, and you’ll see so much more. You’ll be able to experience up-close the ruins you could see only from a distance along the rim roads. Beyond this, the canyon walls are sprinkled with amazing works of rock art—like the one Harris Hardy took us to as described in the Journal Entry above. Antelope House, visible from the overlook located along North Rim Road, is called that because of a truly remarkable wall of pictographs depicting a number of realistically rendered, large-scale though not quite life-size pronghorn antelope, a species that still thrives in the American Southwest (I-13). Your Navajo guide can take you right to Antelope House, where you’ll have a close encounter with the gorgeous paintings on the rock wall adjacent to the ancient structure of four pronghorns among other images of sheep, horses, and dogs. There’s rock art all over the place in Canyon de Chelly, and Harris was happy to tell us the stories underlying all of them. It was amazing.
