Chapter Eleven
Ella didn’t have much time to think about Noah as she spent the morning helping her grandmother wash the walls in the grossdaadi haus. Truth be told, she was the only one completing the chore, while her grandmother sat in her favorite chair and gave directions, but Ella didn’t mind. Her grandmother had spent many years doing household chores and had earned a little rest.
At ten o’clock, her grandmother motioned for her to stop work, and poured a couple cups of coffee. Next she put out a plate of snickerdoodle cookies. “About time for a break, ain’t so?”
Ella sank wearily into a chair. “Jah. A break would be welcome.”
“You must be getting soft, child,” her grandmother chided. “You use to be able to work all morning without getting tired.”
Ella met her grandmother’s amused gaze. “Maybe I’m just getting old.”
“Could be.” Her grandmother winked.
Grandmother Graber took a bite out of a cookie and peered at Ella over the top of her glasses. “It’s good to have you home, Ella. You were away for far too long.”
Ella took a sip of coffee. “I’m happy to be home too. There are a lot of nice things about the Englisch world, but nothing can replace the ones you love.”
Grandmother nodded. “I agree. I see you’ve grown wise in the years you’ve been gone.”
Ella smiled. “Well, I don’t know about that, but I did learn a few things about what is important to me and what isn’t.” She nibbled on a snickerdoodle. “I told daed I loved living here and I’m not sure I want to leave.”
“Das gut.” Her grandmother smiled. “Your father has waited a long time to hear those words. He never stopped praying for you to return home.”
Ella lowered head. “I’m sorry for all the pain I’ve caused the family. I hadn’t planned to be gone for so long.”
Grandmother patted her arm. “None of us are perfect. We’ve all caused pain to another person at one time or another.”
Ella looked out the window at the snowflakes falling steadily past. “I can’t believe how much snow we’ve gotten this winter.”
Grandmother laughed. “You young folk aren’t accustomed to lots of snow. When I was a girl, winters were cold and harsh with a lot of precipitation. Snow fell around Thanksgiving and didn’t melt until spring.”
“I bet you had fun as a child.” She tried to picture her grandmother as a little girl playing in the snow, but couldn’t.
“Grandmother’s eyes twinkled. “I remember one winter we had so much snow it covered the downstairs windows. My father had to tunnel a path to the barn so he could feed the animals. My sisters, brothers and I, spent several days creating a tunnel of snow from one bedroom window to another.” She laughed. “Boy, were we in trouble when our mother finally caught us.”
Ella giggled. “I don’t think we’ve ever had that much snow.”
Her grandmother chuckled. “Just don’t tell your daed. I seem to recall scolding him and your Uncle Melvin for doing the same thing one winter.
