How the Lungs Work

To understand what’s going on in asthma, you have to know how the lungs and airways function in normal conditions. The respiratory system is often pictured as an upside-down, hollowed-out tree. The trunk is the trachea, or windpipe, a wide, fairly stiff tube that links the nose and throat to the lungs. The base of the trachea branches off into 2 large tubes (mainstem bronchi), each of which leads to a lung. Once in the lung, each bronchus splits into several smaller bronchial tubes, and each of these branches into smaller tubes called bronchioles. Each bronchiole, in turn, branches into many pockets filled with thousands of tiny air sacs called alveoli. Bronchial tubes have a wall ringed with muscle on the outside and an inner lining layer that produces mucus that coats the inside of the tubes.
