Chapter Ten

“Yo, Carter. Home girl single or nah?”

Carter wiped sweat from his brow with the hem of his t-shirt. “What home girl?’

His friend Marcus plopped down next to him on the concrete bench. They were playing their usual game of basketball. He and Marcus and their other two friends, Ben and Iggy, met up every Sunday morning to play basketball at a court near Iggy’s place in Decatur.

‘The one who works for you. With the fat ass and the lips.”

“Fool.” Carter slapped Marcus upside the head. “For you? Wendy,” he stressed the name, “is taken for perpetuity.”

“Stop cock-blocking,” Ben panted as he sat on Carter’s other side. “Just because you’re not into the ladies doesn’t mean—”

“Hey, I’m not cock-blocking. I’m saving any female from Marcus’ shitty ways. You know how he stay.”

Ben snorted. “True. True.”

“Are we done?” Iggy jogged over and stood in front of them, hands on his hips. “What’s up?”

“Carter’s tryna keep me from some facetime with the fine shortie that works for him.” Marcus punched Carter in the arm. “Cock-blocking.”

“Dude.” Carter glared at Marcus then turned back to Iggy. “That’s off limits. Tell him my employees are off limits.”

Iggy shook out his shoulder-length dreadlocks. “Uh…”

“If I know them, they’re off limits.” Carter insisted. “I don’t want you messing with people I know, because I know you.” He was way too familiar with the way Marcus treated his women. “Besides, she’s with Jerry.”

‘The bartender? I mean…” Marcus shrugged. “He can watch.”

Carter scowled at him, while the other two doubled over laughing. “Why do I even fuck with you fools, huh?”

“You love us.” Iggy pulled his hair back and secured it with a ponytail holder. “What time’s dinner today? Your old man gonna make that thing with the smoked turkey and collard greens again, because I need more of that in my life.”

“Dinner’s the same time.” Carter took a swig from his water bottle. It might be a somber affair today, since his sister wasn’t talking to him after the way Carter and his dad had ambushed Aline. Her words.

Ambushed.

She’d refused to talk to them, shutting down all of their questions and concerns. She kept insisting she was fine, just grieving. But Carter knew, as did their father, that something else was eating at Aline. Oh, she put on a good front, but it was beginning to crack.

He worried about her.

And he worried about Sullivan, which was…

Crippling.

“Hey.” Marcus tapped him on the chin. “What was that?”

“What was what?” Carter frowned at him.

“You had a thing.” Marcus gestured. “Something wrong with the fam?”

He knew these men from college. The four of them knew everything about each other. Theirs was a judgement free zone, but sometimes he tended to keep stuff close to the vest. The guys were more than okay with Carter’s sexuality, but he tried not to talk about that part of his life.

Despite his openness with his friends, Carter was private. Though the men had no problems recounting their own exploits in pretty graphic detail.

“What’s up?” Ben asked.

“I met someone.
