CHAPTER 21

KODY GAZED AT THE sleeping figure on her couch and smiled. BJ was curled up facing the back of the couch. She had held BJ last night until her tears had subsided and the woman fell asleep. She hadn't had the heart to wake her. The blanket Kody had spread over her was pulled up tight around her shoulders and all that was showing was the back of her head.

With one last glance at the sleeping officer, she headed for the kitchen to make coffee. She wasn't sure what time BJ had to be at work.

Kody was just picking up the pot to pour two cups of coffee when she heard a yelp, followed by a loud thud. She quickly ran into the living room and skidded to a halt in surprise. She didn't know whether to laugh or yell. BJ was on the floor in front of the couch with Jack standing over her determinately trying to lick her face. Her laughter finally got the better of her as she hurried over to pull Blackjack away.

"Come on, you big moose. No one appreciates dog breath this early in the morning." Having successfully subdued Blackjack she turned back to BJ to find her glaring at the dog from the floor.

"What happened?" Kody asked as she helped BJ up. She had a good idea, but she wasn't about to say anything.

BJ spared the big dog one last glare as she got to her feet. Her thoughts were still a bit jumbled from her abrupt awakening. She wasn't sure what time it was or how she ended up asleep on Kody's couch.

"I was just starting to wake up when I felt this warm breath on the back of my neck." BJ didn't add that at first she thought it was Kody nuzzling her neck. That was what made what she did find that much more shocking. "I turned over and came nose to nose with HIM," she glared over at Blackjack, who did his best to look innocent, "then he stuck his tongue in my mouth! That's when I fell off the couch."

"I'm sorry, BJ," Kody said struggling to control her mirth. She flinched when BJ glowered at her. "He really likes you and just gets carried away sometimes. And he's really sorry. Aren't you, Jack?"

Blackjack whined pitifully and his tail thumped on the floor. It was obvious he was struggling to stay on his bed where Kody had exiled him.

BJ mock scowled. "Well, while I might like to be woken up with a French kiss, it certainly wouldn't be one from him."

Kody laughed. "I'm with you on that one. I've had several from him and they did nothing for me either, except to make me want to run for my toothbrush." Kody relaxed when BJ laughed good-naturedly. "I was just getting ready to pour us some coffee when Jack decided to be your wake up call. Have a seat while I make us some bagels and grab the coffee.
