8:22 a.m.

Cyrah showers, changes into a fresh pair of jeans and a t-shirt, and collapses onto the only bed in the room. I shouldn’t have her here, but until I can find a new place for her to live, set her up with a new identity, this is the best way for me to protect her.

“I shouldn’t have showered,” she mumbles as she lays curled on her side, her backpack still on her shoulders, her gun clutched in one hand. I should disarm her, maybe, but I’m not going to take away that security blanket, Cyrah’s means to protect herself. For all she knows, I’m just as much of a threat as those men in her apartment. “I shouldn’t be sleeping.”

“You deserve to sleep,” I tell her, crossing my arms over my chest. The lights are off, but enough sunshine is leaking around the curtains that I can see Cyrah’s face quite clearly. The shape of her mouth, her nose, her forehead, she’s exactly the way I remember her.

“I don’t know you for shit,” Cyrah grumbles, pulling the gun a bit closer. “But you send me money. Why?” I shrug because I’m not exactly the most profound of conversationalists. More often than not, I’m alone. The only time I spend with others is in training, during missions, or drinking on my one day off a month. “You cleaned up my stepfather’s body.” I shrug again. Everything she’s saying is true, all her questions valid. “We fucked each other.”

“I know.” I can’t help myself; this time, I just have to answer.

“You were my first, you know. The only moment of my life with blood that I like to remember.” I smile and move over to the bed, taking the blanket off the end and tossing it over Cyrah’s curled form. “When I wake up, you’ll be gone, won’t you?”

I don’t know the answer to that question, so I don’t say anything.

Within seconds, the girl is asleep and I’ve got a hell of a lot of work to do.
