The Archetype of the Labyrinth

After many centuries of dormancy, enthusiastic recognition is being given to the labyrinth, an ancient archetypal pattern dating back at least 5000 years, based on the spiral and circular formations found in nature.

Since the early 1990s, the “labyrinth movement,” spearheaded by Episcopal priest Lauren Artress, has resulted in the construction of many thousands of new labyrinths. According to website of Veriditas, the organization for the promulgation of interest in the labyrinth, founded by Dr. Artress, at least 5000 labyrinths in 80 countries have been catalogued. On a pilgrimage to France, she had experienced the medieval 11-circuit labyrinth of Chartres Cathedral, the preeminent jewel of Gothic cathedrals, and had the vision (and the feet) to know that our psyches, starving for reconnection with the embodied and “en-earthed” Divine, had a tool mostly forgotten, yet hidden in plain sight.

The labyrinth long predates Christianity, but the ones typically found in Christendom were integrated into the churches dedicated to the Divine Mother during the Middle Ages. The labyrinth is a deeply feminine symbol, with its winding rather than linear paths, evocative of the uterus and digestive organs, as well as the spiraling and cyclic patterns found throughout nature.

A labyrinth is a contemplative tool navigated via the feet touching the ground. It is a meditation that literally ensouls, i.e., ensoles, the earth by means of the human foot. It can also be seen as a mandala metaphor for the inner journey into the deeper realms of the Self and the inner reality, while being supported by the constancy of the earth.
