Chapter 16
HE STOMPED down the trail. No matter how hard he shook his head, trying to make it leave, the fury intensified. Steam from his breath covered his body like a smoldering forest fire. He chomped at the grasses growing alongside the foothill, ripped them from their roots. Scrub and alders pinched at his nose and one good eye like fanged mosquitoes. He hunkered behind the scrub, inhaling oxygen for all its worth. But his throbbing legs permitted him to stand still for only a short time. He must keep moving. Every muscle burned and cried out for release.
His one good eye took in every rustle of the alders, every flutter of a bird. He swept his head from side to side, missing not a stir, relying on his acute sense of smell. Animals in those colorful, sleek skins he’d become accustomed to seeing—and smelling—ambled nearby. A few. But enough to bother him. Did they detect him? Most likely not. He always marveled how close they allowed him to approach without them ever noticing his presence.
Guttural growls emerged from deep inside his belly. Keep quiet, keep quiet, his instincts warned him. He crouched lower, ensuring his shoulder blades remained below the grasses. The creatures would assume the movement as wind sweeping the brush.
His entire life they’d snarled at him, brandishing their bright teeth behind shiny colored armor that clinked and wrinkled with movement. A long time ago, one had caused him great pain. Yet he found little reason to fear them. He sensed their helplessness against him. But this time, hatred for them clawed inside his body, reaching toward his brain and grabbing hold like an eagle with its prey. Especially for the one whose scent had been seared into his brain.
He wanted the man he followed to stop stomping on the path. Every move enraged him. The ground swayed and swiveled, a sensation similar to falling from a tree. He remembered that happening to him once during his sixth summer. He’d climbed a tree for a bird’s nest and had slipped from a branch, months before the hunter had taken out his eye. He’d heard bones shatter near his shoulder area. He’d lain there for days, waiting to die. But he’d survived. All on his own. His young adult bones had healed. Until he’d run into that dastardly bow hunter.
Piercing hot blades of grass singed his skin. His teeth ached like muscles exploding with a driving force. Hatred for that cruel world, mined with deathtraps, pushed him into a lower crouch. His ears filled with white hot blood, enough to crest a small creek. He kept his head in a sweeping motion, his one eye focused on the feet of the two-legged animal pounding the earth in front of him. The one with the familiar stink.
He opened his mouth and flexed his snout. A distraction. More human creatures. They grunted and squealed from the distance, away from the foothills. Only a few lingered closer to him. One of their species lurked even nearer.
