Reverend Newsome, a Methodist minister (fourth from the right), was also a photographer for the Florida Sentinel News in the 1950s. He was assigned to photograph President Kennedy when he came to Tampa in 1963. He also mentored George Robinson’s brother Walter Robinson. (HCPL.)

This is a photograph of Mr. Harris, known as the “Suit Man,” standing in front of attorney Harold Jackson’s office on Central Avenue in 1960. (Courtesy of Myron Jackson.)

Shown above are Lucille, James, and Evelyn Hammond and Dr. Ervin. James, a 1946 Middleton graduate, was the first African American licensed as an electrical contractor in Hillsborough County. He also founded Tampa Hillsborough Action Plan (THAP). Hammond established the “White Hats,” which curtailed a major race riot in 1967 following the death of Martin Chambers. He helped organize desegregation sit-ins in Tampa. He retired from the Army in 1979 as a lieutenant colonel. He was the founder of COPE (Compensatory Pre Primary Education), later operated as Head Start. Pictured below riding in a truck are Hammond’s sons Kevin and Gary. (Both courtesy of James Hammond.)
