Everything is available for an “extra” fee that puts the prices higher than top-tier market prices. Either way, run. If you’re going to pay, go self-published.

Hybrid Publishing

This term has been around a few decades, and they walk a fine line with Vanity Publishing. These have the nice websites, they offer author services, and the author has creative control. The big one I can think of is Inkshares, and it has an odd requirement of a book reaching 250 preorder copies before they publish it, but there are dozens more hybrid publishers.

A good hybrid publisher, unlike Vanity, doesn’t accept everything that gets submitted. They tend to offer a better royalty rate than a traditional publisher, and some of their after-publication services may come with a price tag or a longer contract to recoup the cost in royalties.

My two cents: Hybrid may take a lot of the marketing and nit-picky stuff, but if you’re not writing series and can turn out multiple books a year, you might be better off perfecting your query letter or saving up and going self-publishing. Numbers crunch wise, you won’t make enough off a single book to make their services worthwhile.
