“Walk Right In”

Well, not exactly—you must go through security screening—but a day inside the headquarters of the United Nations is not as “off limits” as many might think. For starters, the Delegates Dining Room serves a weekday prix fixe buffet lunch that’s open to the public (reservations required, 24 hours in advance). Located on the fourth floor with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the East River, it offers classics from around the world, as well as lesser-known dishes from smaller nations. After Mayor David Dinkins left office in 1993, he frequently lunched at the Delegates Dining Room, once remarking that it was “the best kept secret in New York City.”

Also, the UN’s highly regarded one-hour tours are offered each weekday. The guides, from some fifteen countries and conducting tours in twelve languages, are not only knowledgeable about the architecture and art in the distinguished halls and council chambers, but—with a briefing each morning on events and issues being taken up that day—add a newsworthy immediacy to the walk around the UN buildings.

The UN Bookshop, located on the lower level of the General Assembly Hall, offers an international selection of books, including titles published by the United Nations, many children’s books, and official UN emblem merchandise, often sustainably sourced. The UN Gift Shop, across the hall, is stocked with creative and high-quality ceramics, handicrafts, and jewelry from UN member states. Identified by country of origin, the selection offers a kind of “tour” of the world’s artisans.
