Cam had stopped to wonder whether he was taking his photography obsession too far when he found himself on a ladder installing a fancy remote camera station from the pergola covering the backyard patio. And not just any camera. This one was controllable by remote and could swivel with the touch of a button. He must have been good this past year because Santa had been quite generous in the grown-up toy department.

He thought about his wife nailing him on his lame denial about hoping for a family. Before Lacey swept into his existence and brought him to life, the cabin he'd had built at the end of the road behind the Villa was a blank slate. Now it was transformed into a full-on family paradise with a cute little gazebo, a grilling station, hot tub, horseshoe pit, and a fire ring with more safety features than a car.

Kids changed everything.

From the second his Ponytail moved in, the Cameron cabin and not the Villa was the designated Family Justice central. He guessed since technically she was the first of the Justice wives, that made her the squad leader. This status came with a lot of activity, and the cameras helped him record the good stuff.

Like the scene unfolding this very second at the fire ring.

He and Dyl squatted on Drae-designed seats fashioned from old crates. Next to Cam was a large picnic basket stuffed with packs of graham crackers, chocolate bars, and a bag of organic marshmallows. Ponytail had a thing about wholesome foods. If left up to him, he'd stock up on a lot of unhealthy crap. After all, what the fuck did he know?

A digital video recorder sat off to the side. He could see the flip screen viewer and had a handy remote for close-ups and start-stop. The remote also operated the pergola camera.

The fire ring wasn't ginormous. He had it built to specifications, so a very cool retractable mesh screen he’d had made fit perfectly. They hung out here as a family quite a lot, and he couldn't relax unless he had all the safety conditions in proper working order.

This evening's family get-together involved s'mores. He had a solid understanding of proper s'more technique. His experiences as a summer camper and a junior counselor had taught him several things that came in quite handy once he became a dad.

"Daddy, look," Dyl exclaimed. "Did it!" His precocious son was waving a stick with two puffy marshmallows stuck on one end.

"Good job, buddy," he crowed proudly and turned to grin at Ponytail.

Lacey sat across from them with Lily on her lap. His sweet girls were enjoying the crackling fire while his wife brushed Lily's hair.

Gesturing at a tall tin bucket that was technically an umbrella holder, she cracked a joke about the collection of sticks he and Dylan had scoured the countryside to find. "I'm calling you Professor Campfire from now on."

He grinned and blew her a kiss.

When the sticks were ready, he retracted half the mesh fire screen and showed his boy the proper way to toast a marshmallow.
