Commenting on the importance of teachers, Dr. Zella Prince, principal of the Chicago Muhammad University, states, “To me there is always a great need for teachers—good teachers—because good teachers always build a good society and that is what I am willing to work for.”[37] Dr. Prince, Sister Christine, Claretha, and other women’s writings attest to the importance of teaching African American children about themselves. They saw this work as part of the intellectual revolution to provide “educational text books designed for the character building and fundamental, cultural background for . . . children beginning at that important stage that really counts—when they are young.”[38]

Sister Velma X contemplates:

What kind of education will your child receive in the white man’s school? Where does the education begin? Where does the brainwashing leave off? How can we circumscribe the amount of damage done by the brainwashing of our children? These are the questions all parents should ask and do something about. . . . Our children are the foundation of our race. If the foundation is weak our house (race) will fall in.[39]
