He thrust the papers into her hands before she could protest and then he strode out of the room. Drawing the sheets to her chest, she stared at the papers with bewilderment.

They were the legal papers for the foreclosure on her family land, signed with the same L on her husband’s shirt. What did this mean? Why had the papers been with him? And what the dickens did the L mean? Did that mean that her husband was somehow related to something beginning with the letter L? Was that his name?

Panting heavily and drenched with sweat, Harriet jerked awake from her dream. Her eyes roamed around the room as she wondered where she was for a minute. Then they fell on the dying embers of fire, and she realized that it had only been a dream.
