“You do realize that the only way you get to go home is if you tell me everything you know.” Oliver towered over the slouched man in the chair.

Bloody and bruised, the real Mr. Smithey lifted his face. “I don’t understand. . . . We’ve already given you every single detail about our procedures as auditors. What are you after? We run restaurants and hotels. We serve people along the railroad.” The man sounded on the brink of giving up. Which was perfect.

Oliver nodded to his hired brute.

The guy delivered another blow to Smithey.

Smithey groaned.

“I’m the one asking questions here.” Oliver stepped over to Lovett. “Are you ready to talk?”

“You haven’t given us food in days. We can’t sleep tied up in these chairs.” The man’s voice was weak. “We gave you everything about our jobs. Isn’t that enough?”

“No. It isn’t. There’s plenty more I need to know about the Harvey Company. Tell me what I want to know and you can have food and a bed.” He straightened his shoulders. “I’m not an unreasonable man.” But he had left them alone with his thugs for several days so they could get good and scared. Worn out. Roughed up a little.

The two men sent each other weak glances. Lovett lifted his chin. “What do you want to know?”

With a smile, Oliver pulled up a chair and sat in front of them. “That’s more like it.” He waved Ronald over. “Take notes.”

“Sure thing, boss.” Ronald pulled out a pencil and notepad.

“Now, it might seem trivial, but we’re going to start at the very beginning. I need every detail, every function, every minute piece of information. When I ask a question—keep that in mind.”

After he took down the El Tovar, he had plans to do the same to the rest of the empire, which would easily fall with a little help from him and once everyone heard what had happened at the best of the Harvey Houses. He simply needed some insider information.

This was going to be fun.
