Mallory dropped her coat over the back of the seat. The weather was behaving strangely, and it was unseasonably warm. She opted for a seat outside under the sun. Giddiness made her laugh out loud before she covered her mouth and glanced around to make sure no one was watching her. AD made her feel something Don never had; like she was treasured.

She leaned back in her seat. It had been a long time since she’d been so relaxed. Another giggle escaped her. He encouraged her to do things she didn’t think she would ever try. Who knew phone sex could be so freeing?

“It’s been a long time since you smiled like that, Mallory. I miss that.” A shadow fell over her table, and she glanced up at the dark outline of a man.

“Don, wish I could say it’s good to see you.” She crossed her arms under her breasts. “Don’t you have some counseling to do? Ministers to fuck…”

His eyes widened in surprise as if she’d physically slapped him. The look slithered over his face and hastily disappeared. He narrowed his eyes and cleared his throat before taking the seat across from her. “I don’t like your tone, and I certainly don’t appreciate your behavior.” He arched a brow. “You’re the first lady of New Bethel and my wife. Act like it,” he whispered harshly.

She exhaled. Being ambushed by Don was getting old, and she was tired. “Why are you here?”

“I was driving and thought I saw you, so I turned around. You and I are going to talk, whether you like it or not.” The waiter hovered with menus in his grip, and Don held out his hand.

Malory shook her head. “This gentleman won’t be staying.”

The server’s gazed at her for a moment before twisting his head to stare at Don in confusion.

“You’re dining alone. I have time. We will be eating together.” Don’s head bobbed as he agreed with himself.

She waved a hand. “My friend is running behind. He’ll be here. He hasn’t disappointed me yet.”

Don reached out and took the menus from the confused attendant before slapping them down on the table. He leaned forward. “Stop embarrassing yourself with stories. I’m not going anywhere until we talk out our differences. I can’t believe you’re behaving like this. Your mother and I are deeply disappointed in you.”

“Ask me if I care, Donald.” Mal lifted her chin.

“Hey, baby, I’m sorry I’m late. I got caught up in traffic.” AD strolled up to Mal and dipped to kiss her cheek. “I had to bring the ’cycle.”

She looked him up and down. Work boots and jeans riding low on his hips. He wore an open flannel shirt with the sleeves rolled up, over a black wife beater. She turned and gazed at Don, who wore his usual three-piece suit.

Where AD was rough with scruff around his mouth and chin like he needed a good shave, Don’s whole appearance was manicured, and she didn’t know this just by looking at him.
