Chapter 8

They stopped at Keto’s Café and ordered the lunch special. Kayla’s stomach twisted and churned and she was afraid she’d be sick. They’d barely swallowed a few bites when Marcelo laid his fork down and took her hand. “Kayla, I’m sorry for not telling you the line shack was mine and I’m so sorry you were hurt, but once we started getting to know each other, I couldn’t bear the thought of not seeing you or having you close by. Please say you’ll forgive me. Please?”

Kayla stared into the face of the man in front of her. His firm mouth curled as if always on the verge of laughter, and that was what had drawn her to him. He found humor in almost everything and she needed that in her life. His dark hair magnified the inky blackness of his eyes. At the moment his brow was creased with worry. With the exception of her parents, she’d never had anyone even remotely care whether or not she was upset with them. It was a heady feeling.

“I forgive you, Marcelo. I’m the one who was in the wrong.”

“Thanks.” His voice grew husky and he lifted her hand to his lips.

She rested her chin on her other hand and smiled as she spoke teasingly. “And the proposition?”

“Ah, that.” He chuckled. “That sure had Alma intrigued.” He seemed lost in thought for a moment then cleared his throat, his fingers drawing patterns on the back of her hand.

Kayla felt a moment’s apprehension. Alma wasn’t the only one intrigued by his suggestion.

“My mother is back in town. She actually arrived in July, but then immediately went to Cancun with my aunt. Since then she’s traveled a bit more. But now she’s back at the house and has no plans for future travel until it’s time to go back East. She gets lonely and bored at the hacienda and really needs something to occupy her time.” He shook his head as if genuinely concerned. “If you move in it would solve both of our problems—you’d have a place to live and she would have someone to care for. She would cook and clean and possibly even help out at Confetti. Without pay, of course. She doesn’t need money, just needs someone to mother. She needs something to do.”

“I would love having her at Confetti. But she can be there without my moving into your house.”

“But she’d feel like she was inviting herself to your place. If you come to the house she will feel like she’s helping you. That’s important to my mom.”

Kayla bent her head, letting her hair swing forward so that her face was partially hidden. She needed time to think this through. But time was something she didn’t have. She hated staying in hotels; that had been a big part of life with her parents. She didn’t have time to find an apartment, and a hotel would be her only choice tonight.

His fingers curved under her chin and he gently lifted her face to eye level.
