The WMAA board first listed the key words in italic font by the author and then created the paragraph to provide context. Again, once the key words are listed, note how often the individuals listed the same word or similar words. Those are the shared values of the leaders of the organization and, therefore, the organization itself.
Goals
Goals indicate how we get to our vision. What must be done to achieve our vision? The goals of the organization may have a short time frame such as two or three years. What are the priorities for the next few years going to be? First, you need to understand and discuss the options. Discuss what we should do and then what we could do. The group should examine all ideas and possibilities. What needs to happen for each option to be successful? Develop the alternatives and how they might play out.
Even more important, what do you need to stop doing? Often, boards just keep adding on without deleting, putting stress and strain on resources. Included in this step is an identification of resource needs, including people, technology, and money.
Once the most promising alternatives are identified, it is time to prioritize. To ensure that everyone has a voice, consider straw man votes. One organization gave everyone five dots and asked them to put their dots next to their five priorities. This allowed the group to visualize everyone’s thoughts.
Goals need to be limited in number in order to be achievable. The board may want to establish a timeline for achieving the goals. For example, it may believe that certain goals need to be accomplished before others, or it may want to show progress, and some goals can be achieved quickly with larger impact, known as “the low-hanging fruit.”
