As soon as these words were uttered, one of the reporters who sat at a very long table in front of and near the platform half arose from his seat, stamped his foot and exclaimed:“Die Schame!” (What a shame!)

“In all this great world gathering of women,” I continued, “I believe I am unique in two respects. In the first place, I am the only woman participating in these exercises who represents a race which has been free so short a time as forty years. In the second place, I am the only woman speaking from this platform whose parents were actually held as chattels and who but for the kindly intervention of a beneficent Providence would have been a slave herself. As you fasten your eyes upon me, therefore, you are truly beholding a rare bird.”
