Dante held his breath as Jabari left the kitchen. For the second time in one day, he was alone with two strangers, one of which still stared at him with a discerning eye. The other had warmed considerably towards him, but she was still Jabari’s mother, after all. Dante dragged his attention back to Jabari’s father and ducked his head.

“Dinner was lovely.”

The older man laughed. “I bet it was. You’re all right, y’know. Couldn’t stand the last couple men he brought home. I don’t have a problem with gayness, but I got a problem when you don’t have your life together.”

“I understand.”

“Good.” Mr. Jones paused. “So, what are you still sitting here for?”

“What? Oh. I thought- I don’t know. I thought we were still talking.” Dante’s face warmed as he looked between them. “Should I join him? In his room?”

“Y’all are both consenting adults, and it’s his room. I don’t see why you shouldn’t.” Mrs. Jones chuckled.

“Oh. Well-well if you’ll excuse me.” Dante bolted from his seat, knocking the chair back as he leapt out of it. He righted it again and pushed it under the table as he bowed to Jabari’s parents. “Thank-thank you. Uh. Yeah.”

He darted out of the kitchen, following the hallway to Jabari’s room and knocking on the door. It hung ajar, spilling soft light into the dim hallway, and Jabari’s shadow danced along the walls.

“Mnf. Finally.” Jabari yanked the door open, pulled Dante inside his room, and closed the door again. “What took you so long?”

“It was five minutes. Not even.”

“Sure. Five minutes too long. What were you doing in there? Building a campfire?”

“Talking to your father.”

“Oh. Yeah. You know, he seems to like you actually. He hated all my last boyfriends.”

“Yeah, he mentioned them.”

“What did he say? Wait, no, actually I don’t care. Do you want a cookie?” Jabari slinked around the room and picked up a cookie from on top of a spread paper towel on his work desk. “They’re chocolate chip.”

“I could eat one, yeah.”

“Then come get it.” Jabari beckoned him closer, crooking his finger to Dante and curling it forward. His dark eyes glowed with mischief. Jabari was a spider, a black widow with its prey caught in its web.

“Your parents don’t care if I sleep in here?”

“I mean. No? Where else are you going to sleep?”

“The couch or something?”

Jabari laughed. “Why the couch? We can’t cuddle all night on that tiny thing.”

“I was going to sleep on the couch alone.” Dante crossed the room, pausing in front of the other man. He braced himself with both hands on the edge of the table.

“Why?”

“Because it’s polite.”

“Right, but why?” Jabari tilted his head, exposing the creamy skin on his neck. “I don’t get it.”

“Because it’s polite. It’s a courtesy not to sleep naked next to someone when their parents are down the hall.”

“Ohhh. Like you don’t want them to know what we’re doing back here?”

“Precisely.”

“It’s okay. They definitely do their own thing at night. They’re not concerned with us.” Jabari chuckled, finishing the last bits of a cookie and licking his fingers.
