Dave Kemp and Les Dow were both considered dangerous men, and Les's reputation helped Dave in his defense. After the trial, Dave left a note on [Bill] Smith's door to leave the country, and Smith did so.

Dow was born in DeWitt County, Texas, south of San Antonio, in 1860. He became a deputy U. S. Marshal in Texas at a young age and in the middle 1880s was hired by the Southwestern Livestock Association to put a stop to cattle rustling in southern New Mexico and west Texas. Along with his wife, Molly, he moved to Seven Rivers, New Mexico, in 1885. He acquired a ranch in the area, and operated a saloon in Seven Rivers. Les Dow was the father of four sons, two of whom survived to adulthood. Both of them—Hiram and Robert—became lawyers and ranchers in southeastern New Mexico, and their descendants still reside in the area.
