1. To-Do Lists Updated and Current - To-Do Lists are a topic of frequent jokes and witty sayings that really can downplay the value they have in the lives of busy and over-extended schedules. And while often joked about, To-Do lists are absolutely vital for anyone struggling with memory issues. Keeping a running to-do list and making sure it is always current will help you manage all the practical details of your life with fewer expectations that your memory will remember everything it should.
To-do lists help you to make sure you are covering the little details necessary so you are not always running out for last minute items or chores. They also take some of the stress and expectation from your memory allowing it to relax and function better because then it is ok to write a task on your to-do list and then either forget it or allow it to go on the back burner of your brain knowing your list will remind you and your memory doesn’t have to. There are many apps and computer programs and forms available to meet anyone’s preference for to-do list format.
Ideally, a to-do list format would be chosen that fits your particular life and circumstances. If you always have your phone with you, the best place for that running to-do list is on your phone so that you can update and change whenever is needed immediately. Most day planners have a to-do list section as well as do computer programs such as Microsoft Works, but you can always use just a plan little notepad or notebook that is small enough to stick in your bag or briefcase. Regardless of how you keep a to-do list, you need to review and update it at least twice a day. Review it in the evening before bed to account for what you did and did not finish throughout the day. Then you need to review again in the morning before your day takes off in order to evaluate what items are urgently needed to be cared for that day specifically. When life becomes a little less hectic, you can also use the to-do list as a memory exercise testing yourself before you review it morning and night to see if you can remember what changes you made last night or the order of the items listed on the to-do list.
2. Day Timers & Calendar Schedules - Those who depend on day timers and calendar schedules to keep their lives organized will tell you these organizational tools are a definitely necessity in managing both life and your memory. Some refer to them as their other brain because if utilized well, much of the information that clutters your memory making it difficult for memory function to be working when you need it can be captured by your day timer and no longer clutter your memory with expectations to remember little things that are important to your life. This gives your memory more space to remember the name
