NECK PROBLEMS
Neck problems come with many names. Arthritis in the neck. Spondylosis of the neck. Rheumatism. Fibrositis. Slipped disc. And, when they involve pain extending into the arm, neuritis and neuralgia.
At some time during our lives, most of us suffer from pain in the neck or from pain originating in the neck that is felt across the shoulders, in a shoulder blade, or in the upper or lower arm. Pain coming from the neck can also be felt as far away as the hand, and symptoms such as “pins and needles” and numbness can be felt in the fingers. Some people suffer from headaches that can be traced to problems in the neck.
Usually the aches and pains occur intermittently. That is, there are times in the day when no pain is felt, or there are whole days when no pain is felt. The symptoms may appear mysteriously, often for no apparent reason. And just as enigmatically the symptoms may vanish.
These aches and pains also may occur constantly. That is, some patients experience pain at all times, to one degree or another. Often people in this situation find they have to resort to taking pain pills. Although it is uncommon for these people to have to stop work, even this occasionally does occur. More often, the pain simply makes their lives miserable and they must reduce their activities in order to keep their discomfort at a moderate level. Therefore neck problems can seriously affect their lifestyle.
If you have neck problems, you may already have discovered that symptoms can in some cases last for months or even years. Or you may have found treatments that stop your pain, but the pain returns later. You may be reading this book because you have persistent pain that has not disappeared, despite the fact that you have received the best of treatment.
Whatever the situation, you have most likely realized that many of the treatments that doctors, physical therapists, and chiropractors prescribe address only your present symptoms and are not directed at preventing future problems. Time and again you may have to seek assistance to get relief from your neck pain.
How good it would be if you were able to treat yourself whenever the pain returned! Better yet, how good it would be if you could apply a system of treatment to yourself that would prevent the pain from coming back!
But I am not writing about some dream world that does not exist; I am not describing some old black-and-white episode of The Twilight Zone. In fact, since around the early 1970s, many effective methods have been developed that enable us to manage our own spinal problems. Unfortunately, this information has been treated like a well-kept secret. It was not widely disseminated among health professionals until the 1980s. This is because, like many developments in medicine, new ideas must be shown to be effective before they are widely adopted.
The method I have developed has been used by doctors and physical therapists in many parts
