What is the background of these little delicacies?

This is a small welcome for the guest of a restaurant or bar, which he has to pay without having ordered them. It is a Japanese cover charge, formerly known in Germany as "Gedeck".

A German visitor spoke to me triumphantly and remarked: "Well, even in Japan you get ripped off as a foreigner. In a small pub we had to pay another 5-€ per person last night. "My answer was frugal:" That can be, but ... "

In Italy it is called "Coperto", in Austria and Germany it was known as "Gedeck". Many do not know that this "cover charge" is often also charged in Japan. They are quickly upset chats and videos on the Internet telling everyone that they're ripping off tourists in Japan. This is not the case. Of course, each guest has to pay this charge, no matter where he comes from or what he looks like. The problem is that you are rarely alerted to these hidden costs in advance. Some Japanese landlords have realized that not every guest agrees, and many Japanese are bothered by this charge, and sometimes you see signs of restaurants: "No cover charge". The price for this additional fee varies greatly; sometimes it is 10% of the total bill, but often a fixed amount. Bars usually charge between 300 yen and 1000 yen, which is between about 2.30 euro and 8, - euro per person. The return is very different: sometimes it is a real treat, as in the case of the restaurant in which the photo of this chapter was taken. Often it is something very special, such as pickled cabbage, Japanese salad, Japanese potato salad, sour pickled vegetables, seaweed, grilled or cooked fish and many other special Japanese dishes. In modern bars, it is often just a small bowl of nuts for the first drink. Since there is no tipping system in Japan, the restaurant or bar has the option of receiving a small additional income. As a guest, you should not be annoyed about this habit and see the good side: you get a little something to eat, which can never hurt especially with alcohol consumption. Additionally the guest tries food he might never have ordered and gets to know something new and when he is very hungry, this little greeting from the kitchen bridges the waiting time until the ordered food is served.
