Exercise: List all your unfinished jobs. Would they have reached a logical conclusion if you had followed them up without making your own assumptions? Commit to following them up and completing them. Adopt that attitude of following through properly to the end. Observe the results. You will find unexpected avenues opening up. Following up closes the loop gracefully.

25 SELF-ACCEPTANCE

“Because one believes in oneself, one doesn't try to convince others. Because one is content with oneself, one doesn't need others' approval. Because one accepts oneself, the whole world accepts him or her.” — Lao Tzu

Know yourself and your game to achieve your potential.

WE BLOSSOM FULLY WHEN we recognize our unique nature and allow ourselves to be who we truly are. Saurav Ganguly's timing, Sehwag's aggression, Rahul Dravid's ability to play long innings – they knew their nature and their game well. If, instead, Sehwag tried to play defensively like Dravid or if Dravid tried to be aggressive like Sehwag, they might not have been as successful as they were. Sachin Tendulkar's bottom-handed grip was the subject of many a discussion by cricket pundits, but he knew his game and persevered. For that matter, players with unconventional actions like Mike Proctor, Phillip De Freitas, Lasith Malinga, Paul Adams and the like did not try to change to conventional styles. It's important to know your essence, accept it and remain true to it.

The day I accepted that winning was important to me and things changed. I found no need to be nice or politically correct. I stopped trying to hide my weaknesses. I accepted my strengths. I felt no shame in asking for help. I was not apologetic any more. All I wanted to do was win. The moment I accepted it, the results showed. This self-acceptance worked wonders for me at the inter-university games, the Vizzy Trophy, the Sunday league Championships, table tennis matches, the Times Shield matches, in my academics and in my work in the corporate sector – the new attitude seeped into every aspect of my life and gave it a sharp edge.

Coach’s Corner

Accept yourself as you are whole and complete with the good and the bad. It takes a lot of pressure off you. Stop being apologetic about yourself. When you have nothing to hide, you stop worrying about other people and their opinions. Your ease will reflect in your performance positively. When you accept your true nature, you will stop resisting. You move forward towards your potential.

No Ball

Being defensive about yourself. Imitating others. Being someone you are not. Not accepting certain parts of yourself. Saying you know when you don't and consequently, hindering your own growth.

In the movie Cool Runnings (1993), loosely based on a true story, Sanka Coffie, the hero and Derise's friend, puts his foot down in a defining moment. Noticing his friend besotted with the champion Swiss team and how he was trying to behave like them, Sanka tells him that since they are Jamaicans, they will be and play like Jamaicans – be it their clothes, their approach, their dance or their attitude to life.
