Abstract

The management of a full 3D histology needs a tight communication between the surgeon and the pathologist. Clear and safe rules are necessary to enable both the surgeon and the pathologist to point out areas of incomplete tumor excisions very precisely. In Mohs’ micrographic surgery, the surgeon and pathologist is the same person. This has advantages because a communication with other institutions is not necessary.

The General Procedure (Workflow)

The management of a full 3D histology needs a tight communication between the surgeon and the pathologist. Clear and safe rules are necessary to enable both the surgeon and the pathologist to point out areas of incomplete tumor excisions very precisely. In Mohs’ micrographic surgery, the surgeon and pathologist is the same person. This has advantages because a communication with other institutions is not necessary.

However, it is difficult to have a high level of surgical and pathological skills in one person despite some training courses. On the other hand, a good communication with strict rules allows the cooperation between two specialized institutions. In the beginning, these specialists should come to an agreement which dedicates parts of the procedure to each person or department. Considering the complexity of the procedure, a number of different workflows are imaginable. In general there are following steps to consider (see Fig. 5.1):
