The Healthy Fruit
The toxic state of the American diet contributes significantly to the higher heart disease rates Americans have in comparison to other countries. What you eat matters. When it comes to heart health (as well as lowering blood pressure), the pomegranate fruit is one of the best things to work into your diet, whether in food or liquid form. It can help prevent and reverse heart disease and dementia, as well as inhibit cartilage breakdown associated with osteoarthritis.
POMEGRANATE’S DIETARY CONTRIBUTION
Numerous dietary issues are behind the Western world’s problems with disease, which is why eating superfoods such as pomegranate is so vital to good health. English experts such as J. Yudkin from London, in 1972 and later in 1974, and T. L. Cleave from Bristol reported a high incidence of cancer in peoples from the modern world because of diets rich in fats and refined foods, resulting in constipation. Later T. D. Wilkins and A. S. Hackman published similar findings with respect to Americans.8 Their feces contained elevated quantities of nitrogen, fat, cholesterol, biliary acids, and a high concentration of carcinogenic metabolites, which are chemical wastes produced as our body metabolizes the adulterated food.
Dr. Adlercreutz, in his article “Diet, Mammary Cancer and Metabolism of the Sex Hormone,” underlines the fact that Western women enjoy unrestrained consumption of animal proteins and fats, along with refined carbohydrates. This low-fiber diet increases their risk of colon cancer and substantially increases the production of estrogens. This excessive endogenous estrogen—which normally should be eliminated through the stool—is trapped in the colon by constipation and is easily reabsorbed into the bloodstream. In contrast, Asian women who eat high-fiber, unprocessed foods avoid this deadly cycle. Their hormones tend to be much more stable because of their superior diet and good detoxification. It is now commonly accepted that high-fiber diets increase expectancy for good health.
However, although many estrogen and estrogenic chemicals are harmful, take note that some boost health. The pomegranate and such vegetables as soybeans and broccoli offer phytohormones or phytoestrogens, which protect the body from carcinogenic mutations. Typically, diets that contain good amounts of these and other phytoestrogen-rich foods help fight against disease. Chinese and Japanese women eat foods rich in good estrogen, such as tofu, soy, and miso. They seldom develop cancer, and curiously, they rarely suffer osteoporosis or any of the diseases related to low estrogen production after menopause.
