Thursday he slept almost until noon. When he got up, he was in a volatile mood. He discussed the next march through Memphis, scheduled for Monday. Despite his fears that it might be marred by violence, he was determined to go through with it: “I'd rather be dead than afraid. You've got to get over being afraid of death.” Then Andrew Young came back from federal court, where he had been trying to convince a judge all day to permit Monday's march to proceed. At first King seemed angry with his assistant for failing to telephone earlier with a report; but in a moment, his manic mood turned gleeful, and their argument dissolved into a raucous pillow fight.

That evening, just before leaving for dinner, he stepped out onto the balcony. He bantered with friends, who were waiting for him below in the courtyard. As he turned to walk inside to get a topcoat, a single shot rang out from a powerful rifle, pointed at him from the boardinghouse at 422½ South Main. “Oh, Lord!” someone shouted; then the ambulance seemed to take forever. King may have lived until he reached the operating room at St. Joseph's Hospital, but he never spoke again.54
