Andrew slammed the door behind him, but he was so blinded by rage, he didn’t hear it. Standing on the veranda, anguish and jealously thundered in his chest. How can she forsake all I can offer for a life on the edge of civilization? How can she turn her back on the only life she has ever known to live in a log cabin surrounded by Indians and renegades?

He didn’t hear the footsteps behind him until a voice called his name. Startled, he jumped and whirled around, coming face to face with Daniel.

Andrew’s anger surged with renewed fervor. “You! Stay away from Ellie! She’s not for the likes of you.”

Daniel saw that Andrew was close to losing control of his anger. “By that, you mean she’s for the likes of you. Is that it?”

“Yes, you ignorant backwoodsman, Ellie’s a woman of cultured breeding, no doubt beyond your—”

Andrew never saw it coming. In fact, it was the last thing he was expecting. Daniel’s fist caught Andrew flush on the jaw, sending him off the landing and into the street, unconscious.

Daniel rubbed the knuckles of his hand. That’s for sending her to her room crying.

Flexing his hand, Daniel pondered whether he should help Andrew wake up. He actually looks as if he’s napping.

Looking at Andrew with disgust, Daniel sighed and knelt beside him and gave him a good shaking. “Wake up, m’lord, wake up!”
