I know: toppings were your way out of hating dieting. But luckily there are plenty of healthy alternatives! Your food does not have to be bland. Here are some great substitutes for the above toppings:
Real, homemade tortilla strips: one small corn tortilla contains just under 100 calories. Get these crispy at home with two teaspoons of olive oil, and you’ll have strips that are even tastier than the flour ones.
Nutritional yeast. This is what vegans use when they want to make anything cheesy, and it’s far lower in calories and fat that Parmesan cheese. This will work for melted cheese, too.
Greek yogurt. Turn to this instead of sour cream. It has far more protein, so a little will keep you full, but it’s still cool and creamy.
Almond butter with a hint of hazelnut. Instead of full on hazelnut spreads, purchase some almond butter and mix in just a small amount of hazelnut spread (think a ratio of three to one) and you’ll still get the creamy, nutty, chocolatey goodness.
Ketchup. Try making your own from home! It’s very easy and there are several delicious, organic, sugar-free varieties online.
Mayonnaise. There isn’t much that substitutes the stuff, but you can alter it. Instead of using full mayonnaise, cut your usual portion in half and mix in a little olive oil.
Bread crumbs. Purchase bread made from any of the healthy non-white flours we mentioned in a previous chapter and crumble these up. They usually add more flavor, anyways!
Jam. You can easily make some at home with two parts of whatever fruit you want, one part water, and minimal sugar, boiled down. If you make it at home, you can control the sugar plus keep in the healthy, fiber-ful seeds and pulp.
Dried fruit. Aim for fruits that are naturally low in sugar like raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and peaches.
Bacon bits. Let’s be honest; there is no substitution for bacon bits. Many have tried to make one; many have failed. So maybe just take it easy on these while you’re trying to drop some pounds.
