Amazing Facts

Queen Victoria was given a huge wheel of Cheddar cheese as a wedding gift. It weighed more than 1000 pounds - fifteen times as much as a normal-sized wheel!

In a survey conducted in 2011, it was found that cheese was the most common type of goods to be shoplifted. This is thought to be because it is easily placed in a pocket and carries a decent value compared to its volume. Most stolen cheese is said to be sold to restaurants rather than being for personal consumption by the shoplifter!

When artificial cheese was invented in the early 20th century (think American spray cheese for instance), traditional cheesemakers were worried it would affect their sales. They therefore petitioned the government to require the new product to be called embalmed cheese so people would be put off buying it!

A mouse’s diet typically consists of fruit and grain. Cheese actually smells stronger and tastes much richer than they like and generally will only eat it if nothing else substantial can be found!

There was once an Irish chieftain who died of a ‘surfeit of sex’ in the year 1204. His name was Cheese-Guzzler O’Ruairc.

A man by the name of Thomas Nuttall built a replica of Cleopatra’s needle from cheese which was 60ft high and made from 54 wheels of Stilton. Queen Victoria bought them all.

Amazingly, in one study, the type of dreams subjects had when they ate cheese just before going to sleep was different depending on the type! Some cheeses led to vivid, colourful dreams, whereas others led the subjects to see cryptic messages. Interestingly, none of the six types of cheese tested gave the subjects nightmares!

Scientists believe that Swiss cheese, cheddar, mozzarella and some American cheeses help reduce the effect of tooth decay. One theory is that calcium, protein and phosphorous in the cheese protects the tooth enamel, whilst another suggests that eating these cheeses results in greater saliva flow, which washes away bad acids and sugars.

A law was passed in Vermont in 1999 that legally required restaurants to serve apple pie with either a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a glass of milk, or a slice of cheddar cheese weighing no less than half an ounce!

Kraft singles are a popular snack in America. However, they are officially known as Kraft Pasteurized Processed Cheese Product. It is not allowed to be called cheese because less than half of each ‘single’ is actual cheese!
