View from the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway Mountain Station in Mt. St. Jacinto State Park.
Access is excellent throughout the museum, with accessible parking near the door, level access to the building, barrier-free access throughout the hangars and a wheelchair available for loan at the front desk.
Another unique Palm Springs find is Moorten Botanical Garden, located just south of the downtown area on Palm Canyon Drive. It’s pretty intimate for a botanical garden, but then again, that’s part of its charm. Established in 1938, this historic landmark is part of the Moorten family estate. Over the years, they’ve turned their large yard into a living museum that showcases more than 3,000 desert plants from around the world.
In truth, this attraction is best suited for slow walkers; however the good news is, if you can get past the entrance, you’ll probably be able to access most of the hard-packed dirt paths throughout the garden. Parking is only available on the street, and there is a very short and steep driveway at the entrance. Additionally there are no accessible restrooms on the premises. Still if you plan ahead and can make do with the access, it’s a very interesting stop.
Finally, if you’d like to catch a great musical performance while you’re in town, don’t miss The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies. Billed as a Broadwaycaliber celebration of the music, dance and comedy of the 30s and 40s, the follies features performers from 57 to 82 years old. But don’t get the wrong impression; it’s not just a bunch of retired amateurs putting on a community theater-type production. Nothing could be further from the truth, as most cast members are lifelong professional dancers, and the production is reminiscent of a Las Vegas review, complete with elaborate headdresses, skimpy costumes and millions of sequins.
Located in the heart of downtown Palms Springs, the Plaza Theater is home to The Fabulous Palm Springs Follies. Built in 1936 and renovated in 1991, the theater now features ramp access, wide doorways and a selection of accessible seats. The staffis very accommodating, and you can stay in your own wheelchair or transfer to a seat for the performance. Just let them know about your needs when you make your reservations. They even have a scooter and wheelchair check.
The Fabulous Palm Spring Follies offers matinee and evening performances from October through May. As an added bonus, the Plaza Theater is within walking distance of a wide variety of restaurants in the very accessible downtown area, so come early and enjoy a bite to eat before the show. You just can’t visit Palm Springs without seeing the Fabulous Palm Springs Follies.
