Have the child or adolescent give examples of safety, such as holding Mom’s hand, being at Grandma’s, hanging out with peers, etc.

Ask the child or adolescent to give examples of places where he feels safe or has felt safe.

Facilitate discussion of positive memories of being safe.

Case study: Child

Carson is an eight-year-old boy who was referred after witnessing his mother being set on fire by his father.

The clinician introduces Carson to the Safe tool. Carson states that he does not feel safe. He cries and talks about what happened with his mother. The clinician and Carson are able to identify his grandparents as people with whom he feels safe. He also feels safe at school with his teachers.

This was a good opening up for Carson and the clinician.
