Jeremiah checked the horses’ feed and pastures, finding nothing unusual in his observations. The feed was fresh, and the pasture grass seemed fine. Yet the horses still exhibited signs of some type of poisoning—information he didn’t share with the Mullets or Anna Mae and Bekah. He would need to run tests on the feed, grass, and soil, but his priority was getting the horses stabilized.
“Jeremiah!”
He turned to see Anna Mae running toward him as he stood next to the car. “What is it?”
“Another one of the horses collapsed.”
Panic rose inside him, but he maintained his professionalism. Calmly, he took Anna Mae by the arm, and they hurried to the barn. Caleb and Johnny were already there, slapping the horse on his flanks and yelling at him to get up. Jeremiah was about to jump in and help when the horse rose to his feet.
He let out a heavy, relieved breath. He looked at Johnny.
“Geh,” Johnny said. “Get what you need. We can take care of them while you’re gone.”
Jeremiah glanced at Anna Mae. She nodded, her chin lifted in confidence. Her calm certainty reassured him. He rushed out of the barn, jumped in his car, and hurried to the clinic.
When he arrived, Doc Miller was in the back, checking on a cat that had been spayed the day before. Although Doc still used the crutches, his leg was healing enough that he could limp around fairly well. Jeremiah dashed to the storage cabinet and threw open the doors. He grabbed the needles and blood tubes and put them in his bag.
“What’s the rush?” Doc asked, hobbling as he turned around. He leaned forward on his crutches.
Jeremiah explained the horses’ symptoms. Doc frowned. “And you checked the feed?”
“The pasture too. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary, and the rest of the animals are fine.”
“You know what this sounds like?” Doc moved toward Jeremiah. “Years ago I worked with a vet who had several horses die from lead poisoning.”
“How did that happen?”
“They never found out. The symptoms were similar, though. Make sure you test for lead.”
“I will.”
“You should probably take the calcium versenate and IV equipment.”
“I’ll load it into my car.”
Doc followed him out to the front of the clinic. “Do you need any help?”
“Actually, I have plenty.” Anna Mae’s image flashed through his mind.
“Wish I could go out there with you.” He lifted up a crutch. “I’m sick of these things.”
“I bet. I’ll keep you posted.”
After Jeremiah put the medicine and equipment into his car, he hopped inside and turned on the engine. As he drove back to the Mullets’ farm he thought about lead poisoning. Had someone poisoned his cousins’ feed? He’d test it to make sure, but who would do such a thing? Cruelty to horses in the area was unimaginable, but it happened. Did someone want to see the Mullets fail?
Jeremiah gripped the steering wheel and pressed down on the accelerator. He’d do everything medically possible to make sure those horses didn’t die.
