Chapter Fourteen

Tar was awake. Nyssa felt him and realized he was thinking about her. He was worried but was also trying to work through the best way to deal with her now. Well, let him worry. She was not happy with him at the moment. She refused to make this easy on him and wasn’t sure what she was going to do.

Tar stood at the doorway drinking in the sight of Nyssa reclining on his bed. She still looked a little pale with dark circles under her eyes. He felt a pang of remorse. The damage done to her mind could have been irreversible and he might have lost his mate. He would have to work at some sort of compromise—

At least until Nyssa had more time to accept her role on Zylar.

“Nyssa. Little cat. I am sorry.” He walked slowly to her side. She looked up and he felt her unease, saw her flinch from him. “Don’t. Please, don’t withdraw from me, little one. I’m sorry. I will take great care that nothing like this happens again.”

“I won’t have sex in front of anyone,” popped out of Nyssa’s mouth before she had time to hold it back. Shrinking back from him she still managed to glare.

“Won’t have sex? What are you? Ahh…” The Linking Ceremony. Someone had told her. Well, not someone, he was pretty sure it was Tala who had explained what would happen. “Nyssa, it is nothing to worry about. I can prevent you from realizing there are others present.”

“Absolutely not!” Nyssa interrupted. “I can’t do it, Tar. No one is going to watch me reach my woman’s pleasure. What a crock! Screaming orgasm, maybe, but no one is going to watch that either,” she insisted.

“I cannot change the ceremony for you, little cat. It is, what has always been. But I can promise to be gentler with you, to talk to you and to listen to your opinion. Give you time to learn your role here and see there is no choice. I will not forbid you to use your links with me in private. But in public, you must always appear as you should.” Tar thought it a wonderful idea to pretend to bend to Nyssa. It would help her to relax and she would ultimately become the perfect Zylan woman. But giving her a little space now, by humoring her, he would be able to delicately maneuver her into the role.

“But Tar, I can’t…” Nyssa started to say.

Tar cut her off, “Give over, Nyssa. As I will learn to do with you when I can. The ceremony cannot be changed. I would change it for you if I could. I am not excited about having others watch you burn in heated passion. But this is how it must be.”

Nyssa looked at him. Watched him. Something wasn’t right. Oh, he was saying he would change it if he could and that he would let her have more say. But it didn’t feel right somehow. And either he had learned to block her from his thoughts or she was too tired to read them fully.
