Chapter 29

Seth City

Noah burst through the door, his thermal imaging highlighting the Boush feeding in the middle of the floor, a clasped hand flapping as they sucked at the flesh. The rifle burst took the first out, blasting it backwards into the corridor beyond. The following fire split the others in half as the bolts melted the creatures’ outer membrane. Noah urgently stepped through the corridor doorway, sweeping the ceiling corners before slamming it shut. This wasn’t the time for door-to-door work.

“Clear Zuri.”

Zuri prepped Kinsik, the flashbang ready in the girl’s hand. Not the procedure she’d have normally chosen, but the girl needed some success after what they’d witnessed.

“Grenade,” Kinsik shouted, hurling the grenade through the split door. Zuri waited for the eruption before kicking the door through as the thermal image returned to normal.

“Got four in there, Zuri. Two to the left, one each in the right-hand corners.”

She swept the room, picking up on their pulsating signatures and laying fire on the ones to the left. Their images separated as the bolts seared their gelatinous bodies, their jellied innards washing across the floor. Kinsik was soon at the door, covering her back with the powerful rifle she carried, following through on what Zuri asked her to do. Zuri brought her rifle round, the stunned Boush in the corners suffering the same fate as the others. Kinsik moved in to examine the ruptured internal doorway, with its doorframe melted along with part of the wall. She upended a splintered table, ramming it over the space, and wedged one of its legs as best she could. Temporary, but they wouldn’t be here long.

“Clear, Noah.”

“Prepping. Zuri —”

“It has to be Kinsik if this is to work, Noah. You and I know what to do, and at the right time,” Zuri’s adamant tone rung through her words.

“It’s me, Noah. My job.” Kinsik spoke with determination too, though Noah took that as false bravado. It wasn’t helping.

Noah took out two of his four incendiary grenades made by Yasuko. Illegal in Earth wars, but this was survival and fire was the only tool they were sure killed these things. He also removed the last of his chemical explosive rings, the detonator placed in his pouch pocket. Noah had argued for the ring to be thrown, worrying that the slime the Boush used to move may render it useless, but Zuri felt it was too much risk. He checked outside and found a suitable place clear of vehicles and debris, though it oozed with the Boush’s slime trail. Still the best option. They needed the explosive to erupt upwards, unopposed. Noah placed the ring while gingerly stepping through the slime and signalled to Zuri.

Zuri took out her sidearm, the small energy bolt pistol, and handed it over to Kinsik in exchange for her rifle.

“All you need to do is point and shoot. If this goes wrong, you keep on running until you get to the helipad and call for Yasuko.” Zuri gripped her shoulders, looking straight into her eyes.
