By the time Chris made his third visit to the sentry post, it was just after midnight. As before, he exchanged some words with Pete Weiss and asked him about any activity. As before, the answer was the same. Nothing. Chris was sure that his stopovers were starting to get on the young lieutenant’s nerves, but he could deal with that. Despite the lack of evidence to support it, he had a strong feeling that the attack would come tonight. If it did, he wanted to be sure that they were ready.

He climbed with Weiss to the lookout post and scanned the field of fire through the night vision scope. Weiss was right. There was nothing moving out there but the coyotes. Nonetheless, he asked the lieutenant again to keep his men on their toes and to call in any unusual activity, no matter how insignificant. Then he descended the ladder, promising himself that he wouldn’t call on them again until morning. He’d just gotten to his truck when a call came from the lookout. “I’ve got someone about a mile out, on foot.”

Chris ran back to the post and pulled himself up the ladder to the small platform. “Just one?” he asked the sentry.

“Just the one, sir. Looks like he’s struggling.” He moved aside. Chris stepped forward, crouched, and applied his eye to the scope. He could see the figure, staggering directly up route 138, just crossing Elizabeth Lake Road. He couldn’t make out the man’s features, but the profile and gait were unmistakable.

“Well, I’ll be damned,” Chris said. “Joe Thursday.”

“You mean Chairman Thursday?” the guard said.

“The one and only,” Chris said. He was already descending the ladder. “Lieutenant Weiss!”

“Sir?”

“That’s Joe Thursday out there. Open the gate, I’m going out to pick him up.”

“Sir!” Weiss said. “Open her up,” he shouted to his men.

Chris sprinted towards his truck, threw open the door and slid behind the wheel. By the time the gate was rolled back, he was bearing down on it. He passed through and raced directly down the middle of the road to where Joe stood, the M4 carbine laid at his feet, his hands above his head. Chris brought the truck to a stop and threw the passenger door open. Joe hobbled towards the cab and hoisted himself in.

“How you doing, compadre?” Joe said.

“Christ Joe, what’s happening? I been trying to reach you for days. What the hell’s going on?”

“We got a shit storm coming, Chris, a shit storm that’s going to make Dead City look like Ice Capades.”
