“Let’s just hope someone’s had a reason to take this sucker for a spin over the last couple of months,” Joe said. “You want to hold that light steady, Chris. I feel like I’m working in a discotheque.”
“Showing your age there, Joe.” Chris said. He focused the light on the array of wires that Joe had pulled from the dashboard. Joe touched two of the wires together and the ambulance chugged, but failed to start.
“Come on now you sum bitch.”
“Sounding like Hooley now,” Chris said.
“He’s something, ain’t he?” Joe chucked
“That he is.”
“Love the way he fawns over Janet with those puppy dog eyes. Pitiful. Just wish she’d take the bait and leave me alone.”
“Aah Joe, does that mean I don’t get to have you as a father-in-law?”
“Fuck you, Collins,” Joe said. “Okay, sugar, don’t let me down this time.” He touched the wires together and the ambulance roared into life.
“Shoots he scores,” Joe said. “Chris? You want to get the gate?”
While Joe pulled the ambulance forward, Chris ran towards the gate and activated the lifting mechanism. Then, as the gate rattled upward he scrambled on board and buckled himself in. Joe pulled the truck to the top of the ramp and made a right turn. Immediately, the Z’s surged forward, surrounding the vehicle.
“Reckon I should give them a blast of the old Smokin’ Joe karaoke?” Joe said and Chris was about to answer when he spotted his truck, lying on its side in the road.
“That ain’t good,” Joe said. “Not good at all.” He slowed the ambulance to a crawl, angled it towards the Ford and brought it to a near stop. The zombies hummed and pounded their hands against the sides of the ambulance, but neither Chris nor Joe paid them any mind.
“Think he got out?” Joe said, but Chris could see that Ty hadn’t gotten out, could see it in the gore spattering the cab of the Ford, in the scattered bones, the ripped and bloodied military uniform.
“Shit Chris, I’m sorry,” Joe said. “I didn’t know a lot about Ty, but from what I saw, I figured he was a good man.”
“He was that,” Chris agreed. “One of the best.” He suddenly had a very clear vision of facing Ty across the ring in that match-up at the Paradise in what felt like another lifetime. He regretted that he hadn’t had the chance to know Ty Rydell better.
“Get us the hell out of here, Joe,” he said. “These goddamn things are making me sick.”
