Cleanup took all that night and well into the next morning. By the time they fell into their bunks, exhausted, the sun was high in the sky, and Taeâs eyes were sandy from lack of sleep.
When he rolled groggily out of his bed to a knock at his door, it was late evening. He felt like heâd slept no more than five minutes.
Yawning, he dragged himself into fresh clothes and splashed cold water on his face, then staggered out to join the others in the hangar deck.
Everyone else looked just as tired as he did, except for Jez, who looked not only just as tired, but three times as jumpy.
She didnât give him any sort of insulting greeting when he came in, but whether that was because she was too tired to think of one, or too distracted, he wasnât sure.
Or maybe it had something to do with what had happened in the alley last night.
Heâd seen the look on her face. Sheâd thought they were all going to leave her.
He did kind of hate her. She was the most irritating, exasperating person he had ever met, and she had a knack for getting under his skin. But that didnât mean he was going to leave her to get beat up, any more than he would have one of the street-kids heâd grown up with. You just didnât do that to people.
Maybe she didnât know that people didnât do that to people.
Lev stepped forward. There were dark circles under his eyes, but he looked like heâd been awake for some time.
âListen,â he said, voice rough from lack of sleep. âWe have a problem.â
âWhat, you mean besides getting our hangar blown up?â asked Jez. She was drumming her fingers nervously against her hip, and the tip of her toe was tapping out a rhythm on the hard hangar floor.
âVitali added some new security measures,â Lev said. His expression was grim. âGenotyping. Vitaliâs outfitted the guards with DNA sensors. They collected samples from each person he invited, and theyâre setting them into the system.â
Tae stared at him. âThey have DNA scans? How did they do that?â
âNot as exact as DNA scans. But theyâll be able to tell with relative accuracy if we match who we say we are. I doubt theyâll bother with the bodyguards, since they may change up to the last minute. But the guests will be typed as they go through the gates.â
This wasnât good.
âHow accurate are the scans?â Tae asked after a moment.
âAccurate enough. If it was a parent and a child, it probably wouldnât catch it. But me and Mikail? Thatâs a guaranteed mismatch.â
Tae ran a hand over his face.
This wasnât something he could hack, not with no lead time. This was tech heâd never heard of.
Hell.
âSo what do we do?â Jez broke in. Ysbel was still just standing, staring stolidly straight ahead, as if none of this affected her in the least.
âMy contacts could possibly get us a patch that would get us through,â said Masha from one side.
