“Ginji, see if you can drum up interest in a rematch between Ninja Zombies and Black Ice,” Farrell said when Maitland had left.

“On it, boss,” Ginji said, and his samurai froze while he left to do Farrell’s task.

“What makes this kid, Joshua, so unusual?” Barber said. She rose gracefully from the chair and wandered over to the window. A team had begun to clean up the bodies and load them into body pods. “Are we sure we’ve asked Maitland the right questions? The machine only detects and corrects lies. It can’t tell us what questions to ask.” She turned to Farrell. “Let me have a go at him.”

“Maitland will be an essential asset to our science team. Eventually, he’ll settle in, like the scientist-types all do when presented with limitless resources,” Farrell replied. “Scrambling his brain won’t help us find this kid. A team at Base 6 wants to study Maitland’s cloaking and has requested—”

A program-complete alarm beeped and interrupted Farrell.

“That’s the security feed-erase tracker that I put on Zer0-Day,” Ginji said, his samurai reanimating. “The last footage erasure was at a San Francisco New Town Tiburon maglev station, destination Old Town.”

“Excellent work, Ginji. Barber, you’re up. I want you in Old Town San Francisco looking for this kid.”

“Needle in a haystack, boss,” she said.

“Our target has an unusual weapon. Start in the police database looking for murders that fit the cyberspurs.”

“Cyberspurs,” Barber said. “I’ll start with that.”

“I’m assigning you Gregor Pasey. What he lacks in personality, he makes up in tenacity. You’ll need someone like him in Old Town.”

“This sounds ominous,” Barber said, her eyes narrowed. “You only boot up Pasey and send him into the field when things are about to get ugly.”

“Things are about to get ugly, Barber. I grew up in Old Town. It was a pit back then, but it’s become a free fire hellhole in the last ten years. I want you both in full graphene body armor.” Farrell clasped his hands behind his back. “Three gangs call Old Town home: Scythes, Horned Gods and Epitaphs. According to recent law enforcement reports, Scythes have a smaller territory to the east and don’t pose any serious problems. The Epitaphs and the Horned Gods have been at war for decades. Both gangs carry illegal weaponry and cyber enhancements. There’s your lead, Barber. Go.”
